That was me……having seemingly fallen out of love with Architectural design and embarking upon my retirement, I slowly came to the realisation that it was not architecture that I had fallen out of love with, but the administrative responsibility that comes with being the MD of a large practice. The unexpected result of having had a successful career in architecture over some forty years.
Sitting at my drawing board again was a revelation, using a lifetimes knowledge and experience to create the new and reimagine the old.
I began many years ago (aged 17) working for Trevor Hemmings at his Building company in Leyland. After a couple of years I moved to Christian Salvesen Properties in Manchester, part of the Whelmar group. Another building company followed and I then moved into private practices eventually becoming the MD at Briarcroft Architects of Chorley. Finally I became a founder member and MD of MCK Associates based in Preston.
A very successful and award winning design company. After 27 years of good times and some not so good at MCK I now find myself in the fortunate position of working for myself.
In my long and varied career I’ve worked for some of the UK’s biggest National housebuilders namely; Whelmar, Persimmon, Barratt, Redrow, Bellway, Taylor Wimpey, Morris and Keepmoat to name but a few.
I have designed a large number of successful schemes for many small to medium sized developers both regionally and nationally in most areas of the UK plus Eire and the Isle of Man.
I’ve designed many Grade 2 listed building conversions plus sensitive schemes in conservation areas along with many individual dwellings for private clients.
On the Commercial development side I’ve worked with LCC and BAE Systems on the Preston Enterprise zone, McDonald Hotels Group, Windermere Marina, and many more high profile commercial clients.
My work is produced by hand on an old fashioned drawing board, however I have a vast network of associates to draw upon who are specialists in their own right. All of whom are the best in their fields of expertise. I can therefore design and deliver projects from inception to completion with access to the following disciplines;
Sustainability is at the heart of everything I do, producing well considered and sensitive designs that do not seek to over domesticate the existing appearance of the building. Instead, my designs maximise their potential to provide high quality accommodation whilst maintaining their authenticity.
Working with most of the local authorities in the Northwest I undertake a diverse range of design projects including barn conversions, grade 2 listed buildings and properties within conservation areas.
Some projects can be challenging, and I can help guide you through the more complex issues. I recently obtained planning approval for the conversion of a disused 1950’s concrete and asbestos clad agricultural building using Part Q planning legislation much to the delight of the owners.

I work on large and small scale projects to deliver what the client wants,finding solutions to practical, land and legislative restrictions. Presently I am designing some contemporary dwellings using traditional materials which are in keeping with their location in a Cumbrian market town. In addition, a house which is very much of the 21 st century designed with large areas of glass and render in a Lancashire village, as well as some contemporary split level houses in a Cornish village again incorporating locally sourced materials.
I also design complete suites of house types for both National and Regional developers including split level homes for the many steeply sloping sites found in Cumbria and North Lancashire. I am also designing Apartment blocks for both the open market and affordable housing sectors.

I have designed many housing developments mainly in the Northwest but also across the whole of the UK. Projects spanning market housing to affordable and rented housing, single storey to high rise apartments.
I enjoy designing alongside existing constraints and realising a piece of lands maximum potential by creating workable solutions which benefit the client and ultimately the occupier.
My service encompasses Master planning, feasibility sketch layouts, Engineered site layouts, street scenes and individual house design.
I offer a comprehensive service from inception to completion in all aspects of a schemes design.

With traditional commercial enterprises suffering tremendous competition from the onslaught of online solutions, the creation of unique niche market shopping and leisure experiences create an opportunity for investment and regeneration. I have recently obtained planning approval for the conversion of a courtyard of disused Victorian stables and coach houses into a commercial development comprising shops, a small brewery, a micropub and space for functions and markets.
The more flexible the commercial offering, the easier it becomes to adapt to market trends. Construction of this development is scheduled to commence in 2021. Reimagining work spaces is a by-product of the world we now occupy, with home working becoming a permanent solution for most businesses. I have recently designed individual office spaces within a former agricultural building which sits alongside a number of residential barn conversions.
This has the potential to provide a major marketing benefit to the scheme.
